Stuttering Diagnostics Skills Lab

GSHA 2002
Tim Mackesey, CCC-SLP

Abstract:

Quality diagnostics in fluency treatment require close, accurate evaluation of behavioral speech patterns as well as more subjective relevant issues including fear, avoidance, parents, teachers, and peer dynamics. In this interactive, hands-on skills lab participants will perform video analysis of disfluent speech. In addition to objective measurement skills, methods for cognitive and affective symptom evaluation will be learned. Actual case studies of children who stutter will be featured (one or more). The process of logically taking diagnostic findings to begin focused treatment will be covered.

Participants will be able to:

  • Differentially identify more typical and less typical disfluencies

  • Describe effective interviewing skills required to reveal cognitive and affective issues related to stuttering

  • Identify stuttering behaviors and design a client-centered plan of treatment

Outline

  • 1:00-2:30
